The flag of California was meant to be a recreation of the original California flag that was lost in a terrible earthquake in 1906. California was without a state flag until 1911. The grizzly bear that appears on the white field no longer roams the state but in 1846 it was the ideal symbol of ferocity. Adopted in 1849, the grizzly bear is also a symbol seen on the state seal.
